Romane Kouyoumdjian (b. 1993, Les Lilas, France) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brussels, where she has lived since 2015 and works from the artists' collective Ateliers Bardaf.

Her practice spans painting, installation and sculpture, while also embracing drawing, typography, graphic design, photography, music and publishing whenever the subject calls for it. Painting, however, remains at the heart of her work. It became her primary language after an artistic residency in Mexico, where she first began to paint. Since then, it has become a way to communicate, question and engage with the world.

Working with oil, acrylic and pigments, Romane develops a vibrant visual language built on bold colours, organic forms and flattened compositions that reject perspective and hierarchy. Every element shares the same importance, creating images that invite multiple readings.

Her work draws inspiration from literature, feminist thought, scientific structures, mystical symbols and the living world. Through recurring motifs, particularly the body and reproductive forms, she explores questions of identity, collective memory, resistance and freedom. Born to an Armenian father and a Dutch mother, her multicultural background subtly informs her artistic practice.

Both personal and political, Romane's work invites viewers into an open visual dialogue where colour, form and symbolism become tools for reflection and transformation.

Romane Kouyoumdjian (née en 1993 aux Lilas, France) est une artiste multidisciplinaire basée à Bruxelles, où elle vit depuis 2015 et travaille au sein du collectif d'artistes Ateliers Bardaf.

Sa pratique mêle peinture, installation et sculpture, tout en intégrant selon les projets le dessin, la typographie, le design graphique, la photographie, la musique ou encore l'édition. La peinture demeure toutefois le cœur de son travail. C'est lors d'une résidence artistique au Mexique qu'elle commence à peindre. Depuis, elle est devenue son principal langage, une manière de communiquer, de partager et d'interroger le monde.

À travers l'huile, l'acrylique et les pigments, Romane développe un univers visuel aux couleurs éclatantes, composé de formes organiques et d'images sans perspective ni hiérarchie. Chaque élément possède la même importance et participe à une lecture ouverte de l'image.

Son travail puise dans la littérature, les pensées féministes, les structures scientifiques, les symboles mystiques et le monde vivant. Les représentations du corps, notamment féminin, y reviennent régulièrement pour questionner l'identité, la mémoire collective, les luttes sociales, la résistance et la liberté. Née d'un père arménien et d'une mère néerlandaise, elle porte une identité culturelle plurielle qui nourrit discrètement sa pratique.

À la fois intime et politique, son œuvre invite le spectateur à entrer dans un dialogue visuel où la couleur, la forme et les symboles deviennent des outils de réflexion et de transformation.

Romane Kouyoumdjian (°1993, Les Lilas, Frankrijk) is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar die sinds 2015 in Brussel woont en werkt vanuit het kunstenaarscollectief Ateliers Bardaf.

Haar praktijk omvat schilderkunst, installatie en sculptuur, maar strekt zich afhankelijk van het onderwerp ook uit tot tekenen, typografie, grafisch ontwerp, fotografie, muziek en publicaties. Schilderen vormt echter de kern van haar werk. Tijdens een artistieke residentie in Mexico begon ze voor het eerst te schilderen. Sindsdien is het haar belangrijkste taal geworden om de wereld te onderzoeken, vragen te stellen en ervaringen te delen.

Met olie, acryl en pigmenten ontwikkelt Romane een krachtige beeldtaal vol intense kleuren, organische vormen en composities zonder perspectief of hiërarchie. Elk element krijgt dezelfde aandacht en nodigt uit tot verschillende interpretaties.

Haar werk vindt inspiratie in literatuur, feministische theorieën, wetenschappelijke structuren, mystieke symbolen en de levende wereld. Via terugkerende motieven, zoals het lichaam en vrouwelijke anatomie, onderzoekt ze thema's als identiteit, collectief geheugen, sociale strijd, weerstand en vrijheid. Met een Armeense vader en een Nederlandse moeder draagt ze een meervoudige culturele identiteit met zich mee die subtiel door haar werk heen loopt.

Persoonlijk én politiek nodigt haar oeuvre de toeschouwer uit tot een open visuele dialoog waarin kleur, vorm en symboliek ruimte creëren voor reflectie en verandering.

Romane Kouyoumdjian (1993, Les Lilas, Francia) es una artista multidisciplinaria afincada en Bruselas, donde vive desde 2015 y desarrolla su práctica en el colectivo de artistas Ateliers Bardaf.

Su trabajo abarca pintura, instalación y escultura, e incorpora también dibujo, tipografía, diseño gráfico, fotografía, música y publicaciones cuando el proyecto lo requiere. La pintura ocupa un lugar central en su práctica. Comenzó a pintar durante una residencia artística en México y, desde entonces, se ha convertido en su principal forma de comunicación y de reflexión sobre el mundo.

Trabajando con óleo, acrílico y pigmentos, Romane desarrolla un lenguaje visual caracterizado por colores intensos, formas orgánicas y composiciones planas que eliminan la perspectiva y la jerarquía. Cada elemento tiene el mismo peso dentro de la imagen, abriendo múltiples posibilidades de interpretación.

Su obra se inspira en la literatura, el pensamiento feminista, las estructuras científicas, los símbolos místicos y el mundo vivo. A través de motivos recurrentes, especialmente el cuerpo y las formas reproductivas, explora cuestiones de identidad, memoria colectiva, resistencia y libertad. Hija de padre armenio y madre neerlandesa, su identidad multicultural atraviesa sutilmente toda su producción artística.

Entre lo íntimo y lo político, su trabajo invita al espectador a participar en un diálogo visual donde el color, la forma y el símbolo se convierten en herramientas de reflexión y transformación.
